Infamous Us Presidential Controversies That Changed History
Newt Gingrich
While Newt Gingrich never served as president nor won his party’s nomination, his impact on the presidency during the 1990s is larger than some men who’ve held the office, which makes him a perfect fit for this list.
Gingrich, a Georgia Congressmen since 1979, first emerged on the national stage in 1995 when he was chosen as Speaker of the House after Republicans famously retook Congress in the 1994 midterm elections.
Gingrich was a leading figure in the push to impeach Bill Clinton at the height of the aforementioned Monica Lewinsky scandal, which made it incredibly ironic when Gingrich himself resigned his Senate seat in disgrace in January 1999 after his affair with House staffer Callista Bisek — nearly 20 years his junior — was made public. Gingrich and Bisek married months after he’d divorced his wife.
