Rumors about Abraham Lincoln’s sexuality were quietly discussed during his presidency, and are still part of the discourse around the Great Emancipator more than 150 years after his death.
Of the two major relationships that many use to give credence to the idea that Lincoln was homosexual, the more well-known was the one he had with Joshua Speed. During their younger years, Lincoln and Speed lived together — and even shared a bed. They remained close even as life took them on different paths.
The second was with a man named David Derickson, whom Lincoln spent a great deal of time with whenever his wife Mary Todd was away. Derickson was even known to sleep in Lincoln’s nightshirt whenever the two stayed together.
