Infamous Us Presidential Controversies That Changed History
Grover Cleveland
During Grover Cleveland’s first presidential campaign, the Buffalo Evening Telegraph broke a story that Cleveland had fathered a child out of wedlock a decade earlier with a woman named Maria Halpin.
Halpin claimed that the relationship was non-consensual. However, Cleveland strongly denied that, using the fact that Halpin was committed to an asylum to discredit her. Furthermore, his campaign claimed that the relationship had ended prior to Cleveland’s marriage.
The scandal did little to impact Cleveland’s career, as he would serve two non-consecutive terms as U.S. president.
Years later, it was revealed that Cleveland had been the one to commit Halpin in the first place.
