Infamous Us Presidential Controversies That Changed History
Andrew Jackson
During Andrew Jackson’s presidential campaign in 1828, his political opponents made it publicly known that he and his wife, Rachel Donelson Robards, had married before her divorce was finalized.
The press seized on the controversy, attacking the character of both Jackson and his wife. Despite the negative coverage, Jackson won the election.
However, just weeks before the inauguration, Rachel died from a heart attack. Despite the fact that she had been in ill-health for some time, Jackson blamed her death on the stress brought on by the negative coverage, and never forgave his political enemies for “murdering” her.
