John Edwards unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination in both 2004 and 2008, and was the party’s vice presidential candidate during the former. However, his 2008 campaign, and his whole political career, was derailed by a sex scandal that emerged in the tabloids that year.

A story first reported by the National Enquirer, but later verified both other outlets and confessed to by Edwards, revealed that the senator had an affair with filmmaker Rielle Hunter and that he was the father of her child. Furthermore, Edwards was engaged in the affair while his wife Elizabeth publicly battled breast cancer.

The affair not only cost Edwards his affair, but it led to criminal charges that his campaign had illegally used campaign funds to keep the affair quiet.
