Infamous Us Presidential Controversies That Changed History
Gary Hart
Gary Hart, a democratic senator from Colorado, was the frontrunner for the 1988 Democratic Presidential Nomination. A charismatic speaker, many thought Hart had a distinct chance of defeating then-Vice President George H.W. Bush in the general election.
However, Hart’s candidacy went down in flames when photos taken by a private detective — including several taken on a boat named “Monkey Business” — seemed to show Hart engaged in an extramarital affair with a woman named Donna Rice.
Despite denials from both parties, Hart ended his campaign. He briefly reentered the race the following year, but the scandal sapped all of Hart’s momentum, and he never held public office again.
