"Stripper" Natalie Wood in Gypsy, 1962
Natalie Wood, in "Gypsy," starts off as a shy, untalented little girl whose mother is pushing her to become a successful vaudeville entertainer, as well as her sister. Her sister finally rebels and runs off and elopes while Louise (Natalie) puts up with her mother "for a while," turning from vaudeville to a stripper act in a third-rate burlesque club. Then, with help from the other strippers, she learns how to portray herself with a "gimmick," which proves to be successful for her as she progresses to bigger stages. It's then she tells her mother to basically "get lost." Of course, little is shown in this 1962 movie - unlike today's movies.
